Connecting with someone, establishing rapport, does not have to be a difficult thing, although many people find it so. Here are ten key points to remember whenever you set off to meet new people…
- Be happy with yourself.
Much of the insecurity we feel in meeting new people has to do with how we feel about ourselves as opposed to the other person. Work hard and develop positive self-esteem.
- Act Confident…
…..even if you’re not! Chances are the other person is as nervous as you are.
- Expect to connect.
Think positive. Tell yourself that you will connect with people… and you will.
It’s hard NOT to connect with somebody who’s cheerful and smiling.
- Notice others.
Maybe they are smiling and cheerful. Maybe you are attracted to something they are saying or discussing, whatever. Just look for reasons to connect with people instead of excuses NOT to.
One of the greatest gifts you can give another person is to listen to them. Instead of jumping in to say something, listen a bit longer instead.
- Ask questions.
Go one step further and truly take an interest in what they are talking about. Ask thoughtful questions that draw them out and focus the conversation on them.
- Connect with individuals.
You can speak to, present to, teach, or train large groups, but you can only really connect with the individuals in that group. Emphasize this aspect of your communication and build those one-on-one connections.
- Be willing to compromise.
Meeting new people or working with new people invariably means running into positions, opinions, and practices you don’t agree with. If you want to build the relationship, expect to compromise from time to time.
- Treat others as you’d like to be treated.
Just to start. As you get to know each other work hard to treat them like they want to be treated (which may be very different wayFree Reprint Articles, indeed).

- Recognize that LIFE is what you get when you’re born…
…LIVING is what you do with it! You can sit back and wait for life to happen to you or you can make it happen yourself. As Maya Angelou once said, ‘Life likes to be taken by the lapel and told, I’m with you kid. Let’s go!’
- Define life… It leads to the fine life.
Life is not a slogan, no matter what Nike, McDonald’s, ABC, NBC, or any other media giant might have you believe. While those ‘Life is…’ t-shirts are often witty, the philosophy they propose, like the shirts themselves, are rarely ‘one size fits all.’
Define life and living on your own terms and you’ve a better chance of getting both.
- Take charge of your life.
Geoffrey Abert said that when you take charge of your life ‘…there is no longer need to ask permission of other people or society at large. When you ask permission, you give someone veto power over your life.’
To start living your life you’ve got to be in control of it.
- Little things mean a lot.
Life throws a lot of little negative things in our way that must be dealt with or else they will greatly diminish how we enjoy our days.
Stephen Vincent Benet said it best: ‘Life is not lost by dying; life is lost minute by minute, day by dragging day, in all the thousand small uncaring ways.’
- Employ the power of positive quitting.
Most of us view quitting as something negative, but it’s not. ‘Winners never quit,’ we’re told, when, in reality, winners quit all the time: choosing to stop doing things that aren’t creating the results they desire.
When you quit all the things that aren’t working for you… When you quit tolerating all the negative things that hold you back… You’ll create a positive ‘charge’ in your life as well as well creating the space in your life for more positive experiences.
- Charge into your future!
As you recreate this positive force in your life, take big, massive leaps into your future. Be imaginative, bold, and brave! The results may surprise you.
- Use everything.
You are blessed with a particular set of skills and talents that NO ONE else has. Use every skill and talent to live your life as joyfully and abundantly as possible. Leave this life as Erma Bombeck wished to: ‘When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could sayComputer Technology Articles, ‘I used everything you gave me.’’

- Face Facts: YOU may just be the bump in the road that’s slowing you down.
Often the most difficult step in getting out of one’s own way is recognizing that you are indeed, in it. When you encounter problems in achieving your goals, carefully consider whether or not you are the source of those problems.
- You can do anything you want. However, you may not be able to do everything you want.
Most of the time we get in our own ways by trying to do too much all at once. By working hard at trying to do everything we end up accomplishing very little. Concentrating on one or two projects at a time will actually increase your chances getting what you want.
- To get a clear picture, you’ve got to focus.
Once you know which project(s) you will tackle, you must focus on what it will take to really do those projects. Create step-by-step plans for what you will do and when you will do them.
- If it’s on paper, it’s a plan. If it’s in your head, it’s a dream.
Many are reluctant to actually put their plans down on paper. Putting plans to paper is the first physical step to take towards achieving one’s desires. Without a written plan most people will start a project but soon be distracted by the many little things that pop up.
- Just because you’re moving doesn’t mean you’re getting ahead.
A sure sign of a person getting in their own way is when they are working very hard, but not getting any closer to achieving their goals. (This is also one of the most frequent effects of not having a written plan.) To move forward you must take the proper actions at the proper times.
- Not choosing IS choosing.
Another roadblock we create is by over-thinking our options to the point of inactivity. “I could do A, B, or C” we tell ourselves. “I better think about it.” Then we proceed to ponder…. but we never actually decide. What we’re really doing, though, is deciding to do nothing. But guess what? If you do nothing, you get nothing.
- Concentrate on what will work.
Some people are very good at finding all of the reasons why something won’t work. So good that they talk themselves out of even trying. Don’t compound potential negatives, compound the positives and concentrate on why things will work for you!
- If it’s not working, STOP DOING IT!
One definition of insanity reads: “Doing the same thing over and over, but expecting a different result each time.” I tend to think of that more as a definition of humanity. Whether caused by determination, pride, or mere stubbornness, many have trouble recognizing and admitting that things aren’t working. If that’s you, adopt a new motto: “Just don’t do it!” When things stop working, stop doing them, readjust, and move on.
- When you just don’t know, get help.
We can’t know everything. We can’t always solve everything. When that’s the case, get help. There are businesses, counselors, consultants, and coaches who can work with you on almost any trouble spot you may encounter. Use them.
- If it doesn’t make you happyScience Articles, don’t do it.
Working towards your goals may not always be easy. You may not have fun every moment as you wend your way. Overall you should be happy with what you are doing because it’s what you want to do. If that’s not true then you definitely need to re-evaluate your goals or how you are pursuing them.

Want a career (or business) that brings a smile to your heart? Don’t know exactly what that career might be? This list of ideas can start you on your way. Make the process fun by scheduling a visit to your favorite place – the beach, mountains, whatever – where you can compile your lists and daydream too!
Seven years ago, I completed the process described below by trial and error – or was it error and error?! I didn’t have a non-biased person, such as my coach or a consultant to support and assist me in the process. I created the process as I went along. You are much luckier than I was at the time! You have this Life Resume and you know where you can go to hire a coach!
Take an assessment test: personality, skills, etc. I have compiled a few lists of free online assessment tests and quizzes for you at Also check your local phone book for college career centers, career consultants, or career counselors who offer such tests and many other helpful services too.
Start a new type of resume. List the first paying job you had and then start writing all the tasks you performed. You will not be graded on your penmanship… promise!
Compose a volunteer resume, same format as listed above - listing thepositions and tasks you performed.
Create a list of what you volunteered to do when you went to school. What organizations did you belong to? What projects did you volunteer for? If you’re a mom and/or wife (dad or husband), add lists for those areas too! You’re putting together a “this is your liferesume”.
Create a list of every career you’ve ever thought you might enjoysince you were 5 years old. (Ages 6-10 are extremely important!)
Now go back to all your lists and cross off every task that drove you crazy, or that you couldn’t stand doing, or that you promised yourself you’d never do again! Ask yourself, “is this something that I would enjoy doing for 8 hours”?
Take a look at what you are left with and look for the patterns. Forexample: Did you enjoy teaching in each paying and volunteer held? Does organizing or working with numbers or working with your hands come up in your descriptions time and time again? Does a clear picture of your ideal career or business shine through?
